We Didn’t Serve the Same War
Vietnam. The Persian Gulf. Afghanistan. Iraq. Different branches. Different missions. Different training environments. Different homecomings.
Even Veterans who served during the same conflicts didn’t necessarily experience the same war.
The table compares how Basic Training, military culture, leadership, expectations, deployments, and the public’s relationship with the military have changed over the decades.
There is plenty of the usual branch rivalry and Veteran humor, but underneath it is a serious question: How much does the era in which we served shape the Veterans we become?
Coming Home From Vietnam
The conversation takes a much heavier turn when Bob talks about what happened after Vietnam.
For years, many Vietnam Veterans avoided wearing anything identifying them as Veterans. Some left military service off job applications entirely. Veterans returned home from war only to discover that the uniform they had worn in service to their country could become something they felt pressured to hide.
That experience creates an important contrast between generations. Every era of Veterans has faced challenges coming home, but the reception many Vietnam Veterans received was fundamentally different.
Different Generations. A Common Core.
Despite those differences, the conversation eventually comes back to something every Veteran around the table understands.
Strip away the branch, the uniform, the MOS, the deployment location, and the generation, and there is still a common core.
It begins with the shared experience of military training and becoming part of something larger than yourself. Different generations may have trained differently, fought differently, communicated differently, and returned home differently—but the values and relationships created through service remain remarkably familiar.
Finding Camaraderie Again
That shared experience matters after the uniform comes off.
The crew talks about mental health, asking for help, finding the right counselor, and recognizing that the first person you talk to may not always be the right fit.
More importantly, Veterans need people around them.
Whether that connection comes through a Veterans organization, riding group, peer-support program, church, VFW, or simply a few Veterans sitting around a table, finding camaraderie again can make all the difference.
I Got You
Sometimes one of the hardest things a Veteran can say is simply, “I need help.”
But among Veterans, the answer can be just as simple:
“I got you.”
We may not have worn the same uniform at the same time. We may not have served in the same branch, fought the same enemy, deployed to the same place, or received the same welcome home.
We didn’t serve the same war.
But we understand more about one another than we sometimes realize.
